About Sukoon
5:32: Whoever saves one life it is as if he saved the life of all of humanity.
Our Mission
Research shows that Muslim Americans are at a higher risk for suicide attempts. When evaluating the mental health of Muslim Americans, we realized that there is a general under-reporting of mental health issues and general distress in the community. While some Muslims seek support from their faith communities and local masjids, this may not be a viable or accessible option for many, including those dealing with stigmatized issues in the community - such as depression, anxiety, substance use, sexual orientation, or relationship issues. On top of general deficits in cultrally-competent mental health resources for Muslims, there is a lack of non-judgmental and confidential support systems for Muslims dealing with unique challenges. Our hope is that Sukoon is able to fill that gap nationally.
We believe a peer-support model is amongst the most effective ways to provide this culturally-competent and non-judgmental support. Peer counseling provides a scalable solution that allows us to train volunteers to provide support to those in need. We utilize validated counseling techniques that have been shown to be effective in helping individuals navigate their challenges to help you. This support model abides by one simple principle: We keep each other safe.
